Key Responsibilities

As a Marine Intern at Coco Bodu Hithi, you will work closely with a dedicated Marine Biologist, assisting in various tasks that contribute to the resort’s sustainability and marine conservation initiatives. Your role will primarily focus on supporting the resort’s coral restoration efforts and other environmental conservation activities, while gaining invaluable field experience. Below are some of the primary responsibilities you will undertake:

  • Assisting the Marine Biologist: You will assist the Marine Biologist with daily tasks, contributing to ongoing marine research projects, including monitoring reef health, water quality, and biodiversity.

  • Coral Restoration: Be involved in coral restoration projects designed to protect and regenerate local reef ecosystems. You will help with the process of transplanting corals and monitoring their growth to support the restoration of endangered marine habitats.

  • Photo ID Projects: Assist with photo identification (photo ID) projects focused on marine species such as turtles, manta rays, and other local marine life. Your work will help in tracking and documenting marine species for conservation purposes.

  • Guest Interaction: Guide guests on snorkeling sessions, providing them with an immersive educational experience about the coral reefs, marine life, and conservation efforts at Coco Bodu Hithi. You will help guests appreciate the natural beauty of the marine environment while educating them on its preservation.

  • Educational Activities: Lead engaging and informative educational sessions for guests, teaching them about the importance of marine conservation, the local marine species, and the resort’s efforts to protect its environment.

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, the ideal candidate will need to meet the following qualifications:

  • Degree in Marine Biology or Related Field: A background in marine biology or a similar field is essential for understanding the ecological principles that will be applied during the internship.

  • Fluency in English: Strong communication skills in English are required to effectively interact with guests, staff, and the Marine Biologist. Fluency in additional languages is an advantage.

  • Strong In-Water Skills: Applicants should have solid in-water skills for snorkeling and diving, as these activities will be a part of the internship duties. Prior experience in water-based fieldwork or conservation is highly preferred.

  • Knowledge of Coral Reef Ecology/Restoration: Experience or coursework related to coral reef ecology and/or restoration is an important qualification. This will help you understand the tasks involved in marine conservation efforts.

  • Experience with Coral Reefs: Practical experience working with coral reefs is an asset. Applicants who have been involved in reef monitoring, restoration, or other related activities are encouraged to apply.
