The Maldives National University (MNU) and the Occupational Therapy Association of Maldives (OTAM) have partnered to introduce a degree program focused on occupational therapy. This collaboration, aimed at addressing the critical need for trained professionals in this field, was officially announced on Monday.
MNU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam and OTAM Chairperson Aminath Thooha Adhlee signed the agreement, marking the beginning of a new academic chapter. The program, scheduled to begin in 2025, is designed to be a four-year course that equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary for a career in occupational therapy.
Tackling the Shortage of Professionals
Dr. Aishath Shanoora, Dean of MNU’s Faculty of Health Sciences, emphasized the pressing need for occupational therapists in the Maldives. Currently, only a handful of professionals serve the nation, leaving a gap in healthcare services. She noted that the university aims to produce skilled experts to meet this demand.
Program Standards and Approvals
The curriculum has been crafted in collaboration with technical experts and international universities. It adheres to the standards set by the World Federation of Occupational Therapy, ensuring students receive a globally recognized education.
The program has already secured approvals from the Allied Health Council, the World Federation of Occupational Therapy, and the Maldives Qualification Authority.
Dr. Shanoora explained that these approvals provide significant value, opening up better employment opportunities for graduates. She added that the program would not only strengthen ties with healthcare providers but also raise awareness about the importance of occupational therapy.
OTAM Chairperson Aminath Thooha Adhlee shared her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that the initiative aims to increase the number of occupational therapists in the Maldives. She expressed hope that more Maldivian students would explore this field and contribute to its growth in the country.
The Role of Occupational Therapists
Occupational therapists play a vital role in improving lives by helping individuals achieve independence and manage daily tasks effectively. Their work spans hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, and workplaces. They assist patients with physical, mental, or developmental challenges, providing therapy, skill-building exercises, and education for patients and caregivers alike.
With the introduction of this program, the Maldives takes a step toward strengthening its healthcare sector. By training local experts, the country aims to reduce its reliance on foreign professionals and build a sustainable healthcare workforce.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in addressing healthcare challenges and creating meaningful career paths for Maldivian students
