Maldives Enforces Nationwide Ban on Vaping

As of today, the Maldives has implemented a complete ban on vaping and related activities. This decision follows amendments to the Tobacco Control Act, aiming to address rising concerns over public health and safety.

Ban on Vape Products and E-Cigarettes

The sale, distribution, and use of electronic cigarettes, vapes, and vaping devices are now strictly prohibited. Importing these products will result in severe penalties, including a base fine of MVR 50,000. Additionally, violators will be charged an extra MVR 10,000 for every individual vape or e-cigarette unit brought into the country.

Retailers who sell these items face fines starting at MVR 20,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 per unit sold. Free distribution is also penalized, carrying a minimum fine of MVR 10,000. Furthermore, selling vape products to minors incurs a hefty fine of MVR 50,000.

Stricter Regulations on Tobacco

Alongside the vaping ban, the new amendments raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco products from 18 to 21. Smoking within government offices housed in private buildings is also now prohibited.

These measures reflect an effort to curb tobacco use and its impact on public spaces, particularly in areas frequented by young people.

Government's Rationale for the Ban

According to the Minister of Homeland, Security, and Technology, Ali Ihusan, the vaping ban is a response to growing concerns over drug misuse. Speaking to local media, the minister revealed that vape cartridges have been linked to drug use, with recent drug busts uncovering illegal substances in vape devices. He also emphasized that students are increasingly targeted by such products, raising alarms about their accessibility in schools.

The government has categorized vaping as a national concern due to its rapid rise in popularity, especially among younger demographics. Officials warn that the habit not only poses health risks but also opens the door to more severe drug-related issues.

Maldives joins over 30 countries that have already banned vaping, including seven nations within the region. Governments worldwide are taking similar measures to address the health risks associated with vaping and to deter its use among younger populations.

The decision to ban vaping underscores the growing awareness of its potential harm. Studies have shown that vaping can lead to respiratory problems, nicotine addiction, and other long-term health risks. Moreover, the unregulated nature of vape liquids makes them susceptible to tampering, posing additional dangers to users.

By implementing these measures, the Maldives aims to protect its citizens, particularly the youth, from the harmful effects of vaping and related substances.

While the ban marks a significant step toward safeguarding public health, its effectiveness will depend on strict enforcement and public cooperation. Authorities are expected to monitor compliance closely and take necessary action against violations.
