India Donates MVR 8.5 Million for Police Academy Renovations in Addu City

India has strengthened its ties with the Maldives by contributing MVR 8.5 million to renovate the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement in Addu City. This significant gesture underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations and highlights India’s commitment to supporting the development of law enforcement in the Maldives.

A Strategic Investment in Policing and Security

During the graduation ceremony for the 37th Police Initial Training Course at the Police Academy, Minister of Homeland, Security, and Technology, Ali Ihusan, spoke about the importance of this donation. The minister emphasized that such assistance reflects the strong and special relationship between India and the Maldives, fostering collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including security and law enforcement.

The National College of Policing and Law Enforcement is a key institution in training and equipping Maldivian officers to tackle the country’s pressing issues. The renovation will enhance the facility, enabling it to provide modern, effective training to future police personnel.

Graduation Milestone

Minister Ihusan addressed the graduating officers, congratulating them on reaching a significant milestone in their careers. He described their graduation as the first step toward becoming skilled officers dedicated to serving the nation.

The minister highlighted the responsibilities the new recruits would shoulder, urging them to approach their roles with pride, honor, and diligence. He encouraged the officers to play a proactive role in combating drug-related issues and gang violence, two of the most pressing challenges facing Maldivian society.

Tackling National Challenges

One of the critical issues emphasized during the event was the need for concerted efforts to address the drug epidemic. Minister Ihusan commended the police force for intercepting illegal drugs worth MVR 1.3 billion over the past year, showcasing the force's dedication to protecting communities from the devastating impact of narcotics.

The minister also stressed the importance of safeguarding children from crime and guiding them toward safe and productive futures. In this regard, collaboration with other institutions was deemed crucial, especially in addressing challenges such as illegal migration and organized crime.

The event also celebrated individual achievements, with Police Constable Hassan Shamil receiving the prestigious Commissioner’s Excellence Award for being the best student of the course. This recognition reflects the rigorous training and high standards upheld by the academy.

India's support for the Maldives extends beyond financial aid, reflecting a shared commitment to regional stability and progress. Amit, the Director of India's National Police Academy, was also present at the ceremony, further symbolizing the collaborative spirit between the two nations.
