Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Aishath Rameela Resigns Citing Health Reasons

Dr. Aishath Rameela, who served as the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, has officially stepped down from her position, citing health concerns as the primary reason. The President’s Office confirmed the resignation, noting that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu accepted her decision earlier today.

Her departure comes as a notable moment in the Cabinet, reflecting her dedication and perseverance despite significant personal health challenges.

A Battle Against Cancer

In November 2023, Dr. Rameela revealed that she was undergoing cancer treatment, a journey that required her to seek medical care in India. After completing her initial treatment, she returned to work in February 2024, demonstrating her commitment to her ministerial duties.

However, continuing her demanding role while managing her health became increasingly challenging, leading to her decision to step away from public service.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu issued a heartfelt statement expressing his gratitude for Dr. Rameela’s exceptional contributions during her tenure.

“I am delighted to have such an active, trustworthy, and capable person as Rameela in the Cabinet. I am confident that the country will continue to benefit from her services in the future,” he remarked, highlighting her unwavering dedication despite her health struggles.

A Legacy of Service

Dr. Aishath Rameela’s career in public service began in 1990 when she worked as a nurse, showcasing her early commitment to the well-being of the Maldivian people. Over the years, she expanded her impact by serving twice as the State Minister of Health.

Her academic achievements are equally impressive, with a PhD in Social Sciences from a Malaysian institution in 2010. This strong educational foundation enabled her to influence policies in healthcare, agriculture, and animal welfare significantly.

As the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Rameela played a pivotal role in shaping initiatives that supported sustainable farming practices and animal rights. Her leadership was widely respected, earning her praise from colleagues and stakeholders.

During her time in office, Dr. Rameela championed innovative policies aimed at boosting the agricultural sector and enhancing animal welfare standards in the Maldives. Her approach emphasized sustainability, ensuring that farming practices could thrive without compromising the country’s natural resources.

Her dedication to improving animal welfare was also noteworthy, as she worked closely with communities to promote humane treatment and ethical farming practices.

Dr. Rameela’s resignation marks the end of a distinguished period of service in the Cabinet. However, her contributions leave a lasting legacy in the sectors she served.
