In a statement released on social media, ADK Hospital confirmed its awareness of the scam and assured the public that steps are being taken to address the issue.
"Please do not click on any links or provide any personal information in response to these messages," the statement read. "This is a fraudulent attempt to steal your sensitive data."
The hospital emphasized that it only sends verified communications and warned recipients to remain vigilant.
Scammers Mimic Trusted Services
Screenshots shared reveal that some of the fraudulent messages are crafted to mimic trusted services like the Maldives Post Office.
One example of a scam reads:
“Your package has arrived via post, but delivery is unavailable due to unpaid customs fees.”
The message includes a suspicious link urging payment, which authorities believe is a phishing attempt to obtain personal and financial information.
Surge in Scam Incidents Across the Maldives
The Maldives has seen a significant rise in scam-related crimes in recent months, with SMS fraud becoming a major concern. According to official reports:
- Over 28,000 scam cases were reported between late last year and early this year.
- Scammers stole a staggering MVR 27 million, with only MVR 1 million successfully recovered.
Authorities have acknowledged the growing sophistication of these scams and are implementing measures to curb fraudulent activities.
