WAMCO Takes Over Waste Management for Vessels Docking for Bunkering Services

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has officially handed over the responsibility of managing waste from vessels docking at the Maldives Economic Gateway in Ihavandhippolhu, which offers bunkering services, to the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO). The agreement was signed today in a ceremony attended by both companies' leaders.

Speaking at the event, MPL's CEO Mohamed Wajeeh said that WAMCO will handle waste management at a dedicated facility developed on a nearby island. He added that the collaboration would benefit both companies and increase their revenue.

The Maldives Economic Gateway office, known as the North Gateway Office, is located in Uligamu, in Haa Alifu Atoll.

WAMCO’s Managing Director, Mujthaba Jaleel, elaborated that the company will not only manage regular waste from ships but will also handle used and old items from the vessels. He added that all waste generated would be transported to the regional waste management center located on Kun'burudhoo island.

Operations will begin with WAMCO’s employees stationed in Kulhudhuffushi, Mujthaba confirmed. He also noted that as the service expands, additional job opportunities will be created. Waste from the vessels will be transported by WAMCO’s landing craft.

Bunkering services at the gateway were recently initiated with the first ship receiving services through the offshore bunkering operations conducted by State Trading Organization (STO) and Vitol. MPL plans to expand its services, offering a total of 14 different services at the gateway, with most already operational.
