Surge in A-Level Enrollment: 70% Increase in Students for 2024, Says Minister

The number of students pursuing A-level studies has surged by 70 percent this year, according to Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu. The increase comes after a period of concern regarding the declining interest in A-levels among students in the Maldives.

Speaking at the 7th International Teachers' Conference at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) today, Minister Shafeeu attributed the rise in A-level enrollment to the government's ongoing efforts to revitalize the education sector. He emphasized that the renewed interest in higher secondary education will pave the way for more students to transition into university studies.

"The number of students entering grade 11 in government schools in 2024 has increased by 70 percent compared to 2023," Minister Shafeeu announced, adding that this growth in A-level participation is a crucial step in strengthening the country's educational foundation. "This surge will ultimately contribute to the development of a well-educated generation that will play a key role in national productivity," he said.

This dramatic rise in enrollment follows several policy reforms introduced by the Ministry of Education to make A-levels more accessible. Among the most significant initiatives is the reopening of the CHSE building, a flagship A-level institution in Malé City. Additionally, A-level programs are now being offered in 23 more schools across the country.

In an effort to encourage more students to continue their education, the government has also relaxed entry requirements, allowing students to pursue A-levels even if they pass just one subject. This flexibility aims to remove barriers that previously discouraged students from entering A-level programs.
