Strengthening Maldives-India Business Relations a Top Priority: Indian High Commissioner

The Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar, has reaffirmed that enhancing business relations between India and the Maldives remains a top priority for the Indian High Commission. High Commissioner Mahawar emphasized India's commitment to fully supporting Indian businesses operating in the Maldives and pledged 24-hour assistance to ensure smooth operations.

Speaking on the importance of economic ties between the two nations, Mahawar stated, "We at the High Commission will fully cooperate with businesses, offering our services 24 hours a day. We aim to facilitate processes in close collaboration with the Maldivian government." He also stressed that fostering and expanding trade relations is a long-term priority for the Indian government.

The High Commissioner highlighted the ongoing investments from India in key sectors of the Maldivian economy, including tourism, real estate, and housing. He noted that India has been the largest source market for tourists visiting the Maldives for the past four years, benefiting from visa-free travel between the two countries. Additionally, many Maldivians travel to India for medical care and education, strengthening the already robust bilateral ties.

During President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's ongoing state visit to India, both countries have outlined a vision for future cooperation, with a particular focus on strengthening economic and trade relations. As part of this visit, discussions have been held around the potential for a free trade agreement between the Maldives and India.

Indian business leaders have voiced their support for such an agreement, citing its potential to create mutual economic benefits. They have called for swift decisions to move the proposal forward.

President Muizzu has already hosted business forums in Delhi and Mumbai and is set to attend another in Bangalore, India’s business hub. These forums aim to highlight business opportunities, concessions, and plans to diversify the Maldivian economy. The President has also held meetings with Indian business leaders to discuss investment opportunities and further collaboration.
