STELCO Upgrades Male's Electricity Infrastructure Ahead of Hot Season

As temperatures rise and the demand for electricity increases in Male’, STELCO is stepping up efforts to upgrade the city's power infrastructure. The company has announced a series of improvements to ensure a reliable supply during the upcoming peak season.

Major Transformer Upgrade in Male’

In a recent move to bolster the electricity network, STELCO upgraded the substation at the intersection of Majeedhee Magu and Sosun Magu. A significant enhancement involved replacing the old 630 KVA transformer with a new 1,500 KVA transformer, effectively doubling the capacity. This upgrade is expected to improve the power supply reliability and address the growing electricity needs of the city’s residents and businesses.

Commitment to Sustainable Energy

STELCO, through a social media announcement, reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable energy and meeting the city’s increasing electricity demand. The company emphasized that more upgrades are planned for Male's power distribution network. These enhancements will further boost the system’s capacity to handle the anticipated rise in electricity usage, especially during peak periods.

STELCO noted, “We are focused on strengthening the distribution network to ensure an uninterrupted power supply for Male’.”

Strategic Partnership with China’s TBEA Group

In addition to upgrading its existing infrastructure, STELCO is exploring larger-scale projects. The company recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s TBEA Group Co. Ltd. This collaboration marks a significant step toward building a 150MW powerhouse in Gulhifalhu. This initiative would drastically increase the region's power generation capabilities.

The agreement also includes conducting a feasibility study for a high-capacity transmission line connecting Male’, Villimale’, and Gulhifalhu. Once completed, this new line will further improve the power grid’s stability and allow for more efficient electricity distribution across these key areas.

Preparing for the Future

As Male’ continues to grow, the demand for a more robust and sustainable power network becomes even more critical. STELCO’s ongoing efforts to upgrade transformers, expand the distribution network, and partner on larger infrastructure projects show a clear commitment to addressing future energy needs. These strategic initiatives not only prepare the city for immediate power demands but also pave the way for long-term sustainability in the Maldives' energy sector.

With these advancements, STELCO aims to ensure that the residents and businesses of Male’ have access to reliable electricity, even during the most challenging periods of high demand.
