Police Deny TV Allegations Regarding MP Ahmed Nazim and Stepdaughter’s Tragic Death

The Maldives Police Service has today refuted accusations aired by a TV channel concerning the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Dhiggaru constituency, Ahmed Nazim, in relation to the tragic death of his stepdaughter, who fell from a building.

In a rare move, the police issued a public statement clarifying details of the case, citing the need to address false allegations circulating in the media. Typically, police refrain from releasing sensitive information in cases involving minors, but felt compelled to respond due to the gravity of the claims made.

During a press conference, Superintendent of Police Hassan Shifau, Head of the Major Crime Department, explained that the minor had been undergoing treatment for mental health issues for several years. He confirmed that the investigation points to the child having jumped from the building's balcony, based on statements and other collected evidence.

Superintendent Shifau also dismissed allegations of sexual assault raised by the TV channel, stating that the medical reports provide no indication of such incidents. The police confirmed that both the child's parents and her stepfather, Deputy Speaker Nazim, had been interviewed as part of the investigation.

Reiterating their usual practice of not disclosing personal information about minors, the police stressed that this exception was made solely to address the misinformation being spread.
