New Drainage System Near IGMH Effectively Prevents Flooding

The newly installed drainage system near Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), one of the most flood-prone areas in Malé, has officially begun operation today.

With the system in use, the area is no longer experiencing the severe flooding it typically faced, which often lasted for days. Heavy rains have caused flooding in many parts of Malé since early this morning, but this location has remained clear.

A media official from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed that the system was activated today. The road from Ameenee Magu to Thajudeen School is now free of flooding. However, areas further down from Hiriya School to Social Centre are still dealing with high water levels.

MNDF personnel are also deploying pumps to drain floodwaters from other affected areas across the city.

Meanwhile, the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has forecast continued adverse weather, issuing White and Yellow Alerts for various parts of the country. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas are expected over the next 24 hours.
