Mediterranean Shipping Company Begins Operations in Maldives

Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, CEO of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), announced that the commencement of operations by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), one of the world’s largest shipping lines, will significantly increase the volume of containers brought into the Maldives. The number of containers is expected to rise to 6,000 per month following MSC's regular travels to the Maldives.

At a ceremony held today to mark the official launch of MSC's trips to the Maldives, Wajeeh shared that the Male' Commercial Harbour currently handles an average of 5,000 containers monthly. With MSC’s involvement, this figure is expected to increase by an additional 1,000 containers.

Yesterday, MSC's ship, MSC Manasaf, docked at Male' Commercial Harbour, where it was welcomed with a water salute by MPL. This vessel alone delivered 896 containers. MPL confirmed that MSC will make three trips to the Maldives each month, significantly boosting trade capacity.

Wajeeh also highlighted ongoing efforts to streamline services at the Male' Commercial Harbour, emphasizing that trade expansion will follow as more vessels begin their operations.

Centurion, the local agent for MSC, has been instrumental in facilitating MSC’s entry into the Maldives. Aiman Jaleel, Managing Director of Centurion, expressed gratitude for MPL's assistance in making MSC's operations in the Maldives a reality.

MSC vessels will arrive in the Maldives from ports in India, Sri Lanka, and Singapore. With the largest shipping fleet in the world, MSC controls 20 percent of the global container capacity used by shipping lines worldwide.
