MPL Launches Initiative to Plant One Million Trees for Environmental Preservation

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) officially launched its tree planting initiative yesterday, contributing to the government's broader commitment to plant five million trees.

The launch, held on World Environment Day at the future commercial port site in Thilafushi. During a ceremony attended by the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim signed a pledge to plant one million trees over the next five years. This pledge was presented to Minister Tariq to reaffirm MPL's dedication to environmental preservation.

In his address, CEO Wajeeh emphasized the significance of this initiative for environmental sustainability and its importance in securing a healthy future for generations to come. He noted that all MPL departments, regional ports, local councils, and community organizations would actively participate in the initiative, ensuring widespread involvement across the Maldives.

As an initial step, MPL has committed to planting 10,000 trees within the first week. Minister Tariq commended MPL's efforts, describing the pledge as a substantial contribution to the national goal of planting five million trees and recognizing MPL's proactive role as a state-owned enterprise.

The ceremony also included the laying of the foundation stone for a temporary mosque at the port construction site. CEO Wajeeh stated that this mosque would provide prayer facilities for workers during the construction phase.
