MDP Settles MVR 5.6 Million Debt with Maldivian Airlines in Out-of-Court Agreement

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has reached an out-of-court settlement with the national airline, Maldivian Aero, over a debt of more than MVR 5.6 million. The debt was incurred during the most recent presidential election campaign, where MDP officials traveled extensively across the country between September and October of last year.

Maldivian filed a case with the Civil Court over the unpaid airfare after MDP had failed to clear the amount. However, the parties later entered into discussions, leading to an agreement to settle the debt. MDP has already made an initial payment of MVR 1 million as part of this settlement.

The Civil Court today ruled that since both sides agreed to the settlement in June and MDP has started fulfilling its payment obligations, Maldivian's request to withdraw their claim was granted.

However, the court clarified that Maldivian reserves the right to re-file the case should the agreement not be fully honored.
