Government Signs Agreement to Train and License Air Conditioning and Fridge Technicians

To strengthen the skills of technicians in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry, the Maldives government has made a crucial step. Under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maldives Polytechnic, individuals employed in the industry will have access to specialized training and certification programs, with a focus on refrigerator and air conditioner repair.

Agreement Details

The signing ceremony took place today at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology. Minister Thoriq Ibrahim represented the ministry, while Zooshaan Kamaluddin, the CEO of Maldives Polytechnic, signed on behalf of the institution. The three-year agreement aims to equip local technicians with the necessary skills to work in refrigeration and air conditioning services, a growing need in the Maldives.

The agreement emphasizes the ministry's responsibility to grant technicians licenses so they can work in this specialized industry. While trainers will obtain advanced training to match the program's standards, Maldives Polytechnic will also receive assistance in the form of training materials.

Focus on Environmental Sustainability

One key aspect of the initiative is its alignment with the Maldives' environmental goals. The country is committed to reducing its reliance on harmful chemicals like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are widely used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems but contribute to ozone layer depletion.

As part of its commitment to the Montreal Protocol, the Maldives aims to cut HFC use by 80% by 2045. However, this presents a challenge as the alternatives to HFCs are often highly flammable. Therefore, specialized training is crucial to ensure technicians can handle these new materials safely and effectively.

Job Creation and Skill Development

The program is not only about environmental goals but also aims to boost employment in the Maldives. By offering licenses to trained technicians, the government is creating more job opportunities in the sector.

"This agreement will help expand the capacity of technicians in refrigeration and air conditioning, ensuring they meet the growing demands of the industry while contributing to environmental protection," the Ministry of Environment said in its statement.
