Australia to Support Maldives' 20-Year National Development Master Plan

The Maldives has signed an agreement with Australia to receive technical assistance for the creation of its 20-year National Development Master Plan.

Agreement Signing Ceremony

The agreement was formalized during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development yesterday.

Maldives' Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, represented the country, while Australia's High Commissioner to the Maldives, David Jessup, signed on behalf of the Australian government.

Australian Aid and UNDP Support

Under this agreement, Australia will provide AUD 900,000 (approximately MVR 9.4 million) in aid, channelled through the UNDP Integrated Governance Project, to assist the Maldives in drafting the comprehensive development blueprint, according to the ministry.

Cabinet Approval and Public Participation

Last month, the Maldives cabinet approved the initiation of the drafting process for the 20-year National Development Master Plan.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, while speaking on the matter, emphasized that the plan will be developed over the next year with widespread public participation.

The drafting process will involve input from political parties, associations, stakeholders, and experts to ensure a diverse and inclusive vision for the nation's future.

Legislative Support and Nationwide Discussions

"The Master Plan will be supported by dedicated legislation," President Muizzu stated, stressing the importance of aligning the nation's vision with the collective will of the people.

He further explained that discussions would take place across all islands to ensure that the development strategy reflects the needs and aspirations of all citizens.
