'Magey Solar' Initiative Now Accepting Applications for Solar Panel Installation

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has officially opened applications for the 'Magey Solar' initiative, an exciting project designed to bring solar energy to residential rooftops across the Maldives. This initiative is an essential step toward reducing the high electricity costs many residents face while promoting sustainable energy solutions. The project supports the government's ambitious goal of generating 33% of the nation’s energy from renewable resources.

Key Highlights of the 'Magey Solar' Initiative

Who Can Apply?

The 'Magey Solar' initiative is specifically targeted at residential properties. This means that homeowners looking to alleviate their electricity expenses while embracing renewable energy sources are encouraged to take part. If you own a home in the Maldives, this is an opportunity you won't want to miss!

Application Process

The selection of residences for solar panel installation will be conducted based on the order of applications received. This first-come, first-served approach means that the sooner you apply, the better your chances of being chosen. Interested homeowners can submit their applications directly through the Fenaka Corporation website, making the process simple and accessible.

System Assessment and Installation

Once applications are submitted, a survey will be conducted to assess each residence's suitability for solar PV systems. The placement and size of the solar panels will be tailored to meet the specific needs of each home, ensuring optimal performance. This will be done under a net metering policy, which allows residents to benefit from the energy they generate.

Cost Structure

One of the most appealing aspects of the 'Magey Solar' initiative is that there are no upfront costs for the solar PV systems. However, there is a small installation fee of 10% of the system's total value, which must be paid at the time of signing the contract. This cost-effective model encourages more homeowners to consider solar energy.

Distribution Across Atolls

In total, 748 solar PV systems will be allocated across various atolls in the Maldives, with the notable exception of Alif Alif and Alif Dhaalu. Addu Atoll will receive the highest number of installations, with 88 systems designated for this area. This strategic distribution aims to ensure that multiple communities benefit from this sustainable energy source.

System Options and Payment Plans

The 'Magey Solar' initiative will offer both single-phase and three-phase solar systems, available in capacities of 3 kW and 5 kW. The costs for these systems are set at MVR 45,000 for the 3 kW system and MVR 75,000 for the 5 kW system. Applicants have the flexibility to pay in full or choose a more manageable installment plan spread over five years. Monthly payments can conveniently be added to the electricity bill, easing the financial burden on homeowners.

Maintenance Responsibilities

It's essential for applicants to understand that they will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of the installed solar systems. The Ministry has outlined this responsibility clearly, emphasizing the importance of keeping the systems in good working condition to maximize their efficiency and longevity.
