MATI Chairman Calls for More Flights to Enhance Tourism in Maldives’ Distant Atolls

Mohamed Umar Manik (MU Manik), Chairman of the Maldives Association for Tourism Industry (MATI), has highlighted the urgent need for increased flight services to distant atolls as a critical factor in expanding tourism beyond the capital, Male' City.

Challenges to Tourism Development in Remote Regions

During a panel discussion on state TV PSM in celebration of National Tourism Day, MU Manik pointed out that the lack of adequate flight connections poses the most significant challenge to tourism development in remote regions.

He emphasized that expanding flight services to these atolls is essential for broadening tourism opportunities in those areas.

Historical Perspective

Reflecting on the history of tourism in the Maldives, MU Manik noted that transport challenges between Kaafu Atoll and Alif Atoll were major obstacles when tourism was first introduced.

However, the advent of seaplanes transformed the industry in Alif Atoll.

He believes that similar improvements in transportation are necessary for the development of tourism in other atolls.

Need for More Flights

"This growth was propelled by the introduction of helicopters and seaplanes. Without improved travel options, tourism will not flourish in additional atolls. While we have constructed airports, insufficient flight services hinder progress. Frequent flights are vital for expansion," he stated.

MU Manik pointed out that resorts in regions such as Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaalu face operational challenges due to limited flight availability.

He argued that establishing more resorts in these areas is feasible only with three or four daily flights to support them.

"This situation is not commercially viable. Even with new airports, how can we succeed with just two flights? Connectivity is crucial," he added.

Shared Concerns

Hussain Afeef, a shareholder in Crown and Champa, echoed MU Manik's sentiments, stating that merely building airports is not a comprehensive solution.

He stressed the importance of finding effective ways to operate these airports to enhance accessibility.
