Ibrahim Nooradeen was removed from his role on the Board of Directors of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), reducing the board’s members from six to five. The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) confirmed Nooradeen’s departure in a formal notification sent to MACL on Thursday, marking another shift in the leadership of the organization overseeing Velana International Airport’s operations.
Current Members of the MACL Board
Following Nooradeen’s removal, the MACL Board now comprises five members:
- Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed (CEO)
- Ibrahim Siyad Gasim
- Ibrahim Mahudhee
- Sahar Waheed
- Mohamed Riyaz
This adjustment follows a series of changes within MACL’s leadership structure as the organization focuses on reinforcing its governance.
Nooradeen’s Tenure and Previous Roles
Nooradeen was appointed to MACL’s Board of Directors in March 2019, bringing experience from his previous role as Chairperson during President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration. His earlier dismissal from the chair position, which occurred on June 28, 2010, was due to differing perspectives on how the government was evaluating an agreement before the airport was to be transferred to India’s GMR Group. His tenure at MACL has been marked by his involvement in significant policy decisions and infrastructural advancements related to the Maldives' main gateway, Velana International Airport.
Other Recent Changes in MACL Leadership
Nooradeen’s departure is one of several recent changes in MACL’s leadership. Earlier this year, in February, the Chairperson of MACL, Mohamed Umar Manik (MU Manik), also resigned, citing health issues as the primary reason for stepping down. His resignation paved the way for additional restructuring within MACL’s board and leadership hierarchy.
The current members of the board, along with CEO Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, continue to focus on driving strategic growth, improving operations, and addressing the challenges of managing one of the Maldives' most critical assets.
