HDC Allocates Land for Waste Transfer Station as Part of Environmental Initiative

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has designated land in Hulhumale' for the establishment of a Waste Transfer Station, marking a significant step in enhancing waste management in the region.

Tripartite Agreement Signed

A tripartite agreement was formalized today between HDC, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy during a ceremony held at the Environment Ministry.

The agreement was signed by Minister of Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, State Minister for Finance Ahmed Mazin, and HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.

Waste Transfer Station Details

According to the Environment Ministry, the allocated area measures approximately one hectare and will be utilized for constructing the Waste Transfer Station.

The project, estimated to cost USD 13 million, is expected to be completed within one and a half years.

The specific location of the allocated land has yet to be disclosed.

Part of Greater Male' Environmental Improvement Project

Currently, waste management in Hulhumale' is handled at a WAMCO site located to the north of the STO Hotel.

The new station will be a part of the Greater Male' Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project, a government initiative that has been underway since 2018, supported by the Asian Development Bank, JFPRR, and TASF.

Other Waste Transfer Stations

As part of this project, additional Waste Transfer Stations will be established in Male' and ViliMale'.

The Male' Waste Transfer Station was completed last year and is already operational, managed by WAMCO.

Positive Impact on Waste Management

This waste management initiative has also successfully halted the practice of burning waste in Thilafushi.

Now, modern machinery is utilized for sustainable waste disposal.

The project aims to implement waste management programs in various other islands as well.
