Hulhumale' to Launch Bike Sharing Scheme Aimed at Reducing Toxic Emissions

The government has commenced work on a bike sharing scheme in Hulhumale' as part of its initiative to reduce toxic emissions in the atmosphere.

During a press conference at the President’s Office, Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, announced that the bike sharing program would soon launch in Hulhumale' as part of the Low Emission Transport Project.

He revealed that 100 electric pedal-assisted or battery-powered bicycles will be provided to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to initiate the program. “Very soon, we will sign an agreement with HDC to bring these bikes under the program,” Thoriq said, noting that solar charging stations will also be established in Hulhumale' to recharge the bicycles' batteries.

Thoriq further indicated that the necessary studies for implementing the scheme have been completed, and funding is in place. However, additional details about the program have yet to be disclosed.

Bike-sharing schemes have gained popularity in major cities worldwide, including Dubai, where users can rent bicycles for a fixed period at a set price. Such programs typically feature rental and charging stations across the city, designated parking areas for bikes, and a mobile application for users.

This project aligns with the government's broader efforts to decrease reliance on fossil fuels and promote the use of renewable energy. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to ensure that 33 percent of the Maldives’ energy generation comes from renewable sources by 2028.
