Fayyaz Demands Investigation into Company Handling Police Station Project Amid Accusations

Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has called on the government to launch an investigation into the company recently awarded a police station construction project, rejecting what he refers to as “false allegations.” His demand, addressed to Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan, challenges the accusations made by Ihusan regarding the project and stresses the need for a formal investigation.

Minister Ihusan’s Disclosure on the Project Award

During a recent parliamentary session, Minister Ihusan revealed that the USD 3.6 million contract to build police stations on various islands was awarded to an Indian company named Indira. He further stated that Indira has since acquired shares in BIG, a company partially owned by Hassan Ismail, who previously served as the Communications Head at the President’s Office. Currently, BIG is involved in developing Galolhu Moonimaage, a significant property in the Maldives.

Economic Ministry records confirm that Indira’s purchase of shares in BIG took place on November 16 of the previous year. Fayyaz, whose family has ties to BIG, has since spoken out against the allegations, calling them unjustified.

Fayyaz's Response and Appeal for Proper Investigation

Fayyaz Ismail, also serving as Chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), voiced his frustration on X (formerly Twitter) over what he considers to be baseless accusations. He argued that making claims without evidence is “irresponsible” and suggested that Minister Ihusan, as head of the agencies tasked with investigating such matters, should first pursue a thorough inquiry.

To counter the allegations, Fayyaz has taken concrete steps. He confirmed that he has filed formal requests with both the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the police, seeking a transparent investigation into the matter. In a firm statement, he said, “Minister Ihusan should refrain from making further statements until he fulfills his duty to the public by conducting a proper investigation.”

Fayyaz’s Request to the ACC and Police

In his letters to the ACC and police, Fayyaz emphasized that despite accusations that have circulated over the past year, no official investigation into the project’s handling has been initiated. He urged these agencies to act quickly in reviewing the claims and assured them of his full cooperation should an investigation be undertaken.

Fayyaz also expressed concerns about the effect that unsubstantiated claims could have on the reputation of involved parties, including his family. He underscored the importance of truth and accountability and reiterated his belief in a fair investigation to clear any misunderstandings surrounding the project.

Background of the Agreement

The contract with Indira was signed during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, establishing an agreement for the construction of police stations across 61 islands. The total contract value was USD 41 million, with an initial payment of USD 3.6 million. However, Minister Ihusan has recently raised concerns about the project’s current status and the whereabouts of the advance payment, noting difficulties in locating Indira and verifying the condition of the funds.

Public Calls for Clarity and Accountability

This case has drawn significant public interest, as citizens await further clarity on the project’s development. The calls for transparency from both the government and public officials underscore the necessity for accountability in high-value government contracts. For many Maldivians, this investigation represents an opportunity to see if government contracts are handled with transparency and integrity.

Fayyaz’s direct appeal to authorities illustrates his commitment to ensuring accountability while protecting his and his family’s reputation. As the ACC and police are called upon to look into the issue, the public’s hope remains for a thorough investigation that will clarify the roles and actions of all involved parties.
