State Minister Fairoosh Transferred from Higher Education to Homeland Ministry

Dr. Abdulla Fairoosh, formerly the State Minister at the Ministry of Higher Education, has been transferred to the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. The move was confirmed by Homeland Ministry spokesperson Fathimath Rifaath, who stated that Fairoosh began his new role this past Sunday as State Minister.

Before his appointment at the Ministry of Higher Education, Fairoosh held various senior positions at the Maldives Police Service, including Assistant Commissioner of Police. He retired from the police in January 2021 and later worked closely with Maldives National Party (MNP) President Mohamed Nazim during the recent presidential election.

This transfer comes amidst President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's efforts to reduce state expenditure. He recently announced the removal of seven state ministers, 43 deputy ministers, and other political appointees, which is expected to save MVR 5.7 million per month from the state budget. The President has given a 15-day timeline to implement these changes.

According to data from July 2013, there were 1,249 political appointees across 16 agencies, including the President’s Office.
