New Bridge Park Opens to Celebrate Maldives-China Friendship

A new park, symbolizing the enduring friendship between the Maldives and China, was officially inaugurated today. This park celebrates the shared efforts behind the iconic Sinamale' Bridge, a vital infrastructure project that has dramatically improved connectivity in the Maldives. The opening ceremony was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives and the Maldivian Minister of National Planning.

Honouring the Sinamale’ Bridge

The centrepiece of the park is the monumental Sinamale’ Bridge, a transformative project that links the capital city of Malé with Hulhumalé and Hulhulé. This 2-kilometre bridge has played a crucial role in improving the lives of Maldivians, providing a seamless connection between islands that once required ferry travel. The bridge is now a daily route for thousands of residents and tourists, marking a turning point in the country’s infrastructure development.

A Symbol of Friendship

The park itself reflects the strong diplomatic ties between the Maldives and China. Visitors can enjoy seating areas designed for relaxation, alongside a display of photographs that document the various stages of the bridge’s construction. These images showcase the dedication, expertise, and collaboration between the two nations in bringing this project to life.

China’s significant contribution to this project further cements its partnership with the Maldives. The total cost of the Sinamale’ Bridge amounted to approximately USD 200 million, of which China provided USD 116 million in free aid. In addition, a loan of USD 72 million was extended by the Chinese government, while the Maldives contributed USD 12 million to the project.

The Future of Bilateral Cooperation

The Sinamale’ Bridge and its surrounding park represent more than just infrastructure. They stand as a testament to the growing cooperation between the Maldives and China. With this landmark project completed, both nations look forward to further strengthening ties through future collaborations that benefit both sides.

This park now serves as a lasting reminder of the partnership between the two nations, reflecting their shared vision for growth and development. For the people of the Maldives, it is not only a place to relax but also a symbol of the deep bonds forged with China.
