Police Approve Bassam’s Request to Delay Flat Handover Amid FAM Funds Misuse Case

The Maldives Police have granted an extension to former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Bassam Adeel Jaleel to hand over two apartments in Hulhumalé, which were allegedly purchased using misappropriated FAM funds.

The original deadline for the handover expired yesterday. On the same day, Bassam submitted a request to the police, asking for an extension until the end of the month. After reviewing the points raised in his request, the police have decided to grant the extension.

Previously, the police had informed Bassam that failure to comply with the deadline would result in the properties being seized, as per a Criminal Court order issued on September 28.

Bassam is accused of using funds provided by FIFA to help Maldivian football clubs during the Covid-19 pandemic to purchase the two apartments. The case has now been forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office for potential prosecution.

In addition to Bassam, the police have also requested the Prosecutor General's Office to press charges against the seller of the apartments, Amin Construction, along with former FAM Finance Head Mohamed Ageel and FAM employee Hassan Waheed.
