Former FAM President Bassam Asks Police for More Time on Apartment Handover

The Police announced today that Bassam Adeel Jaleel, the former President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), has requested an extension on the deadline to hand over two apartments in Hulhumale' allegedly purchased with association funds.

The original deadline for the handover, set for today, pertains to the two flats acquired from Amin Avenue. However, Bassam's legal team has submitted a letter to the Police seeking an extension until the end of the month. The Police indicated that they will respond to this request.

Previously, the Police had warned Bassam that failure to surrender the apartments by today would lead them to take possession of the flats, as directed by the Criminal Court's order issued on September 28.

The Police accuse Bassam of acquiring the two apartments in Hulhumale' using funds provided by FIFA to help football clubs navigate the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The case has since been forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office.

Additionally, the Police have sought to press charges against the seller of the apartments, Amin Construction, as well as the then FAM Finance Head Mohamed Ageel and FAM employee Hassan Waheed.
