Maldives to Raise Legal Age for Tobacco Sales to 21 Under New Amendment

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to propose an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, which would raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco and tobacco products in the Maldives from 18 to 21. This move is part of the government's ongoing efforts to reduce tobacco use, particularly among young people.

Focus on Youth and Health

The key motivation behind this amendment is to discourage young people from starting smoking. Studies show that raising the legal age to 21 can significantly reduce the number of teenagers and young adults who pick up smoking, as they are less likely to start once they reach adulthood. By making it harder for younger individuals to access tobacco, the government hopes to decrease smoking rates and improve public health outcomes over the long term.

Stricter Enforcement of Tobacco Laws

In a post shared on social media platform X, President Muizzu outlined that the amendment will be introduced in Parliament soon. He emphasized that it is part of a larger push to tighten tobacco control measures across the nation. As part of these efforts, the government plans to implement stricter enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with the Tobacco Control Act. This could include heavier penalties for businesses that sell tobacco products to underage individuals and more robust monitoring of tobacco sales.

Vape Ban and Increased Taxes

The proposed amendment comes at a time when the government is also taking steps to regulate the use of electronic smoking devices. A plan is already in place to raise duties on vape products imported between November 1 and November 15, with a further increase expected after November 15. In addition, President Muizzu has announced a full ban on the sale and use of vapes, which will take effect on December 15. Authorities have been instructed to begin preparations for enforcing the ban as early as November 14.

Maldives to Implement Total Vape Ban with Legislative Amendments This Week

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared a total ban on vapes and vape-related products in the Maldives, instructing relevant authorities to enforce these changes by two specified deadlines.

Financial Measures to Support Tobacco Control

To further curb the use of both traditional and electronic tobacco products, the proposed amendment introduces a 50% tax on electronic tobacco products. Additionally, businesses will be required to pay an MVR 8 fee per sticker for these products, along with another MVR 8 charge for flavors and chemicals added to tobacco.

Impact on Public Health and Revenue

The proposed changes to the Tobacco Control Act reflect the government’s commitment to reducing smoking rates among the Maldivian population, particularly the youth. By raising the legal age and introducing stricter enforcement and taxation measures, the government aims to create a healthier environment for future generations. At the same time, these measures are expected to increase government revenue, which can be reinvested in public health initiatives and other essential services.
