Abdul Majeed Mahir of Velaana-ge Passes Away at 96

Abdul Majeed Mahir of Velaana-ge, celebrated for his decades of invaluable service to the nation, passed away this afternoon at the age of 96.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed his condolences on social media platform X today, sharing his sorrow over the loss of this esteemed individual.

"Late Mahir was a traditional Maldivian medicine expert. He passed on valuable lessons of traditions and history to today's generation. He is a father who brought up many well-educated sons and daughters who have gone on to serve the nation," the President stated.

Mahir's Legacy

Mahir's legacy includes children such as former Defence Minister Ameen Faisal, former Maldives Ambassador to the UK Farah Faizal, and Ibrahim Faisal, all born from his marriage to Athiree-ge Ameena Mohamed Ameen.

He also had two children from his previous marriage to Koli-ge Fathimath Nasira: the late Mohamed Mahir Didi (Koli-ge Mohamed Didi), a notable figure in Maldives tourism, and Ahmed Mahir Didi (Koli-ge Ahammaidhy), who leads tourism ventures in the Maldives and Seychelles.

His final marriage was to Heera Yoosuf fulhu's Saeedha, with whom he had three children: Midhhath Mahir, Gulnaz Mahir, and Tholath Mahir.

Early Life and Family Background

Mahir was born to Velaanage Mohammaidhy and Fuvahmulah Funaadu Ganduvaru Aisha Didi.

On his maternal side, he was a descendant of Al Sultan Mohamed Ghiyasuddeen.

Historical Significance

Historian Ahmed Alaa Didi remarked that Mahir's passing marks the end of a chapter in Maldivian history.

"He witnessed many historical events and places in the Maldives. Among such witnesses, he alone remained in good health to share stories from our history with today's generation."
