A tragic accident early this morning in Hulhumale' claimed the life of 23-year-old Hassan Samah, a Maldives Correctional Service officer, when a speeding sports car collided with his motorcycle near Central Park.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:48 am, according to the Maldives Police Service. Samah, a passionate runner from Laamu Atoll Isdhoo, was in Male' to participate in the BODU5 marathon, which took place earlier today in Hulhumale’. He had spent the week in the capital, preparing for the event, and had spent time with his family the night before.

Samah was transporting marathon participants to the event on his motorcycle when the speeding car struck him in front of the Ooredoo head office. He sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Hulhumale' Hospital but tragically died while receiving treatment. A second person riding on the motorcycle with Samah sustained minor injuries.

Police have arrested the 26-year-old driver of the sports car involved in the collision. Authorities are continuing their investigation.

Samah was well-known for his love of running and frequently participated in marathons. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through his community and the wider public.

The accident highlights ongoing concerns about the dangers posed by speeding cars in Hulhumale'. The area near Central Park, where the collision occurred, has been the site of previous fatal incidents, including a similar accident just last month in Hulhumale' Phase 2.

Following the incident, the organizers of the BODU5 marathon, 3000-TfG, expressed their grief on social media, writing: "We are heartbroken to share the tragic news that Hassan Samah, a 23-year-old participant in today’s BODU5 race, passed away in a road accident on his way to the event. Hassan was an enthusiastic runner, and his loss deeply affects us all. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this time of unimaginable grief. We kindly request everyone to respect the privacy of his family during this difficult time. May he rest in peace."

However, the organizers' decision to proceed with the marathon, despite the tragic incident, has sparked public backlash. Many have criticized the move, arguing that the event should have been postponed out of respect for Samah’s passing.

The incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations in Hulhumale', particularly around high-traffic areas like Central Park, where reckless driving continues to pose a threat to public safety.
