Traffic Accidents Surge in the Maldives, 1,907 Incidents Reported so far

The Maldives has witnessed a significant rise in traffic accidents this year, with 1,907 incidents reported so far, according to the latest data from Maldives Police Service. This marks an increase of 431 accidents compared to the same period in 2023, when 1,476 accidents were recorded by August.

The Male' region continues to be the most affected, with 125 injuries and five fatalities reported. The highest number of accidents occurred in March, with 301 incidents recorded. Other months have averaged over 200 accidents, with most occurring in Male', Hulhumale', and along the Sinamale' Bridge.

Recent high-profile accidents have raised public concerns about road safety. Among the most serious was the tragic death of 23-year-old motorcyclist Hassan Samah, who died from head injuries following a collision with a speeding sports car in Hulhumale'. On July 31, another sports car lost control in Hulhumale' Phase 2, severely injuring a stationary motorist. Just this morning, another collision between a motorcycle and a car resulted in injuries to the motorcyclist.

In light of the rising number of traffic accidents and growing public alarm, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has directed authorities to implement stricter traffic safety measures. This action follows Friday's fatal crash and aims to curb the surge in road incidents.

The increasing frequency of accidents, particularly in urban areas like Male', highlights the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, stricter traffic enforcement, and greater public awareness.
