Three Arrested for Selling Pornographic Material on Telegram

The Maldives Police Service has apprehended three individuals linked to the illegal sale of pornographic images and videos via the messaging app Telegram. This operation, spearheaded by the Cyber Crime Center, targeted those responsible for disseminating explicit content, including material involving minors.

Details of the Arrests

The suspects have been identified as:

  • Zubair Ali, 45, from Bahaaruge, Alif Dhaalu Mahibadhoo
  • Nasif Ali, 46, from Male’ (Register No. 14751)
  • Ismail Rabeeh, 29, from Silinco, Kaafu Kaashidhoo

Zubair and Nasif were arrested on August 10, while Rabeeh was taken into custody on August 20. Following their arrests, a court ordered that all three individuals be remanded in custody for further investigation, with each suspect receiving an additional 15-day remand at recent court hearings.

Investigation Findings

The police operation revealed disturbing findings during their investigation. Authorities seized 14 electronic devices related to the case and took control of nine Telegram accounts linked to the suspects. Additionally, law enforcement officials identified and shut down 571 Telegram channels utilized for distributing pornographic images and videos, including those featuring minors.

The scale of explicit material discovered is alarming. The seized channels contained an estimated 241,651 pornographic images and 86,618 videos. Notably, 43 channels were specifically involved in distributing child pornography. This extensive network had approximately 3,468 paid subscribers, generating around MVR 2 million in subscription fees for the suspects.

The Maldives Police have committed to pursuing further investigations into this case, aiming to uncover additional individuals involved in the creation and distribution of illegal content.
