STELCO Warns Customers of Scam Involving Fraudulent Phone Calls

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has sounded the alarm over an increase in fraudulent phone calls targeting its customers. These calls, made by individuals posing as STELCO representatives, are part of a larger effort to obtain sensitive personal and financial information under pretences.

Managing Director Fahmi Speaks Out

In a statement shared on social media, STELCO’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahmi, brought attention to the growing issue. "We’ve been made aware that some of our valued customers have been receiving scam calls from people pretending to be from STELCO," Fahmi noted. He urged customers to exercise caution and verify any communication that seems suspicious.

How the Scammers Operate

The fraudulent calls typically involve offers of fake promotions or discounts or claims of resolving supposed technical issues. These tactics are designed to trick unsuspecting customers into sharing private information, such as credit card numbers or bank account details, which could then be used for fraudulent activities.

STELCO has emphasized that it does not request personal or financial details over the phone. Customers are advised to immediately end any suspicious calls and contact the company directly via official channels to confirm the legitimacy of the communication.

Scammers Targeting Other Organizations

This scam is part of a broader trend that has affected other state-owned companies in the Maldives as well. In the past, fraudulent callers have posed as representatives of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), among others, successfully deceiving individuals and obtaining significant amounts of money.

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Fraud

The Maldives Police Service has been working to dismantle these fraud networks. As of July 2024, authorities had blocked more than 500 bank accounts tied to scam activities and disabled numerous device networks, SIM cards, and web links associated with these schemes.

Despite these efforts, scams continue to pose a threat, and citizens are urged to remain on high alert.

Tips to Avoid Falling Victim

STELCO and law enforcement recommend the following measures to help protect against scam calls:

  • Never share personal or financial details over the phone: Official representatives from organizations like STELCO will never request such information in this way.
  • Verify suspicious calls: Always contact the company directly through its official channels if you have any doubts.
  • Report suspicious activity: If you suspect a scam, notify both STELCO and the Maldives Police Service immediately.

With vigilance and awareness, customers can help safeguard themselves from falling victim to these scams.
