STELCO Refutes Allegations of Unethical Billing Practices

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has firmly denied accusations of unethical billing practices made by former President Abdulla Yameen. In a statement released yesterday, STELCO addressed the claims, emphasizing its adherence to regulatory standards in managing meter readings and billing procedures.

According to STELCO, the company rigorously follows established protocols for electricity billing. The statement outlined that STELCO’s staff are diligent in visiting households monthly to take meter readings and generate accurate bills. This process is integral to ensuring that customers receive timely and precise billing for their electricity usage.

STELCO reassured the public of its commitment to operating within a stringent regulatory framework, dismissing any suggestions of rule violations. “We assure the public that STELCO is committed to complying with all regulations and will not engage in practices that undermine these standards,” the statement declared.

The company also criticized the spread of misinformation, which it claims is designed to erode public trust. STELCO emphasized that its employees, who are also customers, receive bills calculated using the same procedures as those applied to all households.

In response to Yameen’s allegations, STELCO highlighted that no household is billed without a meter reading. The company has invited relevant authorities to verify its compliance with billing regulations.

Former President Abdulla Yameen had raised concerns at a People’s National Front (PNF) meeting last Thursday, alleging that STELCO had ceased taking regular meter readings and was unfairly allocating the annual increase in electricity consumption in Malé to household bills. Yameen had called for legal action on the matter.

STELCO remains committed to transparency and accuracy in its billing processes and continues to invite scrutiny to affirm its adherence to regulatory standards.
