Sports Car Accident Case Sent to Prosecutor General’s Office for Charges

The Maldives Police Service has completed its investigation into the high-profile sports car accident in Hulhumalé Phase 2, which occurred on July 31, and has now forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General's Office for charges to be filed.

The accident took place near the Vinares Flats when a speeding sports car lost control and collided with a man on a parked motorcycle, causing significant injuries. The impact of the collision sparked public outrage, especially due to the nature of the accident and the involvement of a high-powered vehicle.

According to police reports, the car was driven by Ibrahim Ikram, who was accompanied by two passengers, Ikramurrahman and Jinah Ismail. All three fled the scene immediately after the accident but were apprehended later that evening.

Following the arrest, Ikram was initially remanded in custody until the end of the trial. However, the High Court later ordered his release, citing procedural issues—specifically that Ikram had not been given the opportunity to secure legal representation during his initial remand hearing.

Despite his release, Ikram was rearrested the following day and remanded in custody for three more days, after which the court extended his detention for an additional 30 days. His two passengers, Ikramurrahman and Jinah Ismail, also remain in remand pending further legal proceedings.

The sports car involved in the accident was reportedly not registered for use in the Malé area, adding another layer of illegality to the case.

The case now rests with the Prosecutor General's Office, which has accepted the police's findings and is expected to press charges against the three suspects. The incident has drawn significant attention in the Maldives, with the public closely following the legal process as the authorities seek to ensure accountability.
