PNC Claims President’s Reforms Will Usher in New Democratic Era for Maldives

The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has proclaimed that the Maldives is poised to enter a new era of democracy, thanks to the reform measures introduced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The party made this assertion in a statement released today, coinciding with International Democracy Day.

Reflecting on the 16-year journey since the Maldives embraced a multi-party system, the PNC highlighted that while significant progress had been made, comprehensive reforms had been lacking until now. The statement lauded President Muizzu’s efforts to implement transformative changes, including the introduction of a cap on parliamentary membership and the establishment of conjoint elections.

“The party firmly believes that President Muizzu’s reforms will mark the beginning of a new chapter in our democratic history,” the statement read.

Key reforms cited by the PNC include the "Maldives First" policy, which aims to align national decisions with the will of the people, and measures to enhance the independence of the judiciary and other state institutions. The PNC asserted that political interference in the courts has been eradicated, and local councils now possess the authority to generate revenue and operate with greater autonomy.

The statement also claimed that the era of utilizing state institutions to suppress political opposition has ended, paving the way for a more open and competitive political landscape. According to the PNC, these reforms are set to bolster Maldivian democracy and enhance governance in the long term.

In expressing gratitude to President Muizzu, the PNC noted that the reforms are in alignment with Islamic principles, underscoring the party’s commitment to both democratic values and religious values.
