Ministry to Identify and Support Future Teachers through School Visits

Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu announced last night that the ministry will soon begin visiting A' Level schools to identify students who are interested in pursuing a teaching career. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the shortage of Maldivian teachers in schools.

The current administration has expressed concern over the low number of local teachers and has introduced plans to boost teacher numbers through a national program. As part of this effort, the government will offer a monthly allowance of MVR 1,500 to A' Level students who express a genuine interest in teaching.

"Once we identify the students interested in teaching, we will provide them with the allowance. We are currently in the process of this identification," Minister Shafeeu stated.

According to statistics from the Education Ministry, there is a significant need for teachers in various subjects. Specifically, 253 primary grade teachers are needed, along with 208 English teachers and 175 mathematics teachers. In total, the Maldives requires an additional 113 teachers beyond the current workforce.

This proactive approach aims to not only fill the existing gaps but also to nurture future educators who will contribute to the country’s educational development.
