MIFCO Reports 12.5% Increase in Fish Processing Volume

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) recently announced a remarkable 12.5% increase in fish processing over the past week, marking a significant turnaround for the fisheries sector in the country. This uptick reflects the resilience and potential of the industry following a challenging period.

Rise in Fish Processing and Vessel Participation

According to MIFCO's latest figures, the company processed 467 tonnes of fish last week, a notable improvement from the 415 tonnes processed the previous week. This surge in processing is complemented by a substantial increase in the volume of fish received from fishing vessels. A total of 192 vessels contributed to this increase, up from just 119 vessels the week prior. This boost of 73 additional vessels highlights the growing engagement of local fishermen and their commitment to revitalizing the industry.

The peak processing day in this recent period was September 3, when MIFCO received 135 tonnes of fish from 44 vessels. This spike demonstrates the potential for recovery within the fishing community, which is critical for both the local economy and the livelihoods of fishermen.

Initiatives to Boost Fishing Activities

In an effort to further stimulate fishing activities, MIFCO has implemented a new credit system designed to support local fishermen. This innovative initiative allows fishing vessels to receive up to 10 tonnes of ice, with the costs to be deducted from future sales. This strategy not only aids fishermen in preserving their catch but also incentivizes them to bring more fish to MIFCO's processing facilities.

Furthermore, MIFCO is actively addressing outstanding payments to fishermen. As of September 3, the company has disbursed USD 71 million, with an ambitious goal of processing payments within a two-week timeframe. This commitment to prompt payments is vital in building trust and encouraging continued participation from local fishermen.

Enhancements in Fish Processing Operations

MIFCO's recent enhancements to its fish processing operations are also noteworthy. The company has optimized both its fishing vessels and collection centers to ensure greater efficiency. These improvements not only streamline the processing of fish but also provide enhanced support for local fishermen.

By investing in operational efficiencies, MIFCO aims to solidify its position as a leader in the Maldives' fisheries sector. The company's proactive measures signal a renewed focus on the sustainability and growth of the industry, which is essential for the long-term viability of fishing in the Maldives.

The recent increase in fish processing reported by MIFCO is a positive development for the Maldives' fisheries sector. With a rise in the volume of fish received, more fishing vessels participating, and initiatives to support local fishermen, the outlook for the industry appears brighter than it has in recent months. MIFCO's ongoing efforts to improve operations and ensure timely payments reflect a commitment to the fishing community and the broader economy of the Maldives.

As MIFCO continues to implement these measures, the hope is that the momentum gained will lead to sustained growth and a revitalization of the fishing industry, benefiting both local fishermen and the economy as a whole.
