Japan Commits USD 140,000 to Renovate Malé Seawall

Maldives and Japan have formalized an agreement for the renovation of the Malé seawall. The exchange of notes was signed today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer and Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori.

Under the Japanese Economic and Social Development Programme, Japan will provide USD 140,000 in support of the design phase of this crucial renovation project. This assistance marks the first step in a comprehensive effort to enhance the seawall's capacity to safeguard Malé from climate-related threats.

“This initiative is vital for the safety and resilience of our capital city,” stated Minister Zameer during the ceremony. He emphasized the project’s importance in protecting the Maldives from the escalating risks associated with rising sea levels and other natural disasters. Zameer also highlighted that this project reaffirms the strong bond between the Maldives and Japan, ensuring continued protection for future generations.

Reflecting on past cooperation, Minister Zameer recalled the significant protection the seawall provided during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, thanks to Japan’s assistance in the 1990s. He extended his gratitude to Japan for their ongoing support, which underscores Japan’s role as a key partner in the Maldives' development journey.

The signing ceremony was attended by various officials, including Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, Ministry of Finance, the Embassy of Japan, and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
