Farhad Rasheed Appointed as Member of Judicial Service Commission

Civil Court Judge Farhad Rasheed has been appointed as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), representing the lower courts. He was elected to the role through a vote by the courts and took his oath of office today.

In a ceremony held at the President’s Office, Farhad was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain, in the presence of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Farhad’s appointment comes after he secured the highest number of votes in an election held by the Department of Judicial Administration last month, where he received 91 votes. His closest competitor, Criminal Court Judge Ibrahim Ihusan, garnered 71 votes.

Farhad, who hails from Gaafu Dhaalu Fiyori, has been a Civil Court judge since 2013 and is the longest-serving judge at the Civil Court. With nearly 20 years of experience in the judiciary, he brings a wealth of legal expertise to his new role in the JSC.

The JSC is a key institution tasked with overseeing the judiciary in the Maldives. It comprises 10 members, including a Member of Parliament, the Speaker of Parliament, a High Court judge, a Supreme Court judge, a lower court judge, the Attorney General, the President of the Civil Service Commission, a public representative, a lawyer's representative, and a presidential appointee.

Farhad holds a Bachelor's degree in Shariah and Law from the Maldives College of Islamic Studies.
