Schools Urged to Avoid Collecting Funds for Teachers' Day Celebrations

The Ministry of Education has issued a directive advising schools across the Maldives not to collect funds from parents to celebrate Teachers' Day. The annual celebration, held on 5th October, has seen repeated complaints from parents about being asked to contribute money for festivities.

In a circular sent to all schools today, the Ministry outlined clear guidelines for this year's celebrations, emphasizing that schools should avoid expensive ceremonies and instead focus on scientific and productive activities.

Key instructions include:

  • Schools should celebrate between 6th and 10th October.
  • Activities must be conducted within official school hours, with assemblies not exceeding 45 minutes per session.
  • Celebrations must be kept within school grounds, and no external trips or gift-giving by students or parents are allowed.
  • The activities should reflect the importance and dignity of teachers without becoming elaborate or costly affairs.

The Education Ministry reiterated that Teachers' Day is about honoring educators and highlighting their critical role in society. Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafiu previously stated that while parents may have differing views, no parent will be forced to pay for these celebrations.

The Ministry's decision to discourage fundraising from parents for Teachers' Day is a positive step towards reducing the financial burden on families. By promoting simpler, more meaningful celebrations, the focus shifts back to the real intent of the day—appreciating the invaluable contribution teachers make to the nation.
