Applications Open for Elections Commission Member Post as Fuad Thaufeeq’s Term Nears End

The President’s Office has officially opened applications for the position of member of the Elections Commission, as the term of current Elections Commission President Fuad Thaufeeq is set to expire in November 2024.

Fuad, who has served as the head of the Elections Commission since November 2019, will see his five-year term come to an end. The announcement from the President’s Office invites eligible candidates to apply for the position before the deadline of 12:00 pm on September 23.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be at least 25 years of age.
  2. Have no proven hadd (criminal) offences against them within the past five years.
  3. Must not be holding any elected or appointed political positions.
  4. Must not be currently employed by the government or any other organization.

Selection Process

After the application period closes, the President will nominate candidates and forward their names to parliament for approval. Once parliament approves the new member, the Elections Commission will hold an internal vote to elect a new president from among the five commission members.

The appointment comes at a critical time, as the Elections Commission plays a pivotal role in overseeing the country’s elections and ensuring the integrity of the democratic process.
