Sports Ministry Seeks Land Allocation in Thilafushi for Racing Track Development

The Ministry of Sports has formally requested the allocation of land in Thilafushi for the development of a dedicated racing track, Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu announced today.

This request follows the government’s decision to revoke earlier permissions for racing and drifting activities in Hulhumalé. The revocation came in the wake of a tragic accident last Thursday, in which a young prison officer lost his life in a collision between a sports car and his motorcycle during a street racing event in Hulhumalé.

Minister Rafiu explained that the move to secure land for a dedicated racing facility aims to address concerns raised by both the racing and drifting communities, as well as improve safety standards. He met with senior representatives from both associations to discuss their grievances and review current health and safety measures at racing venues.

"Our team has been tasked with reviewing the safety protocols. Whatever the sport, the environment must be safe for both participants and spectators," Rafiu stated during a press conference at the President's Office.

"We held the meeting to explore ways to enhance safety standards and ensure the sport can be enjoyed without putting lives at risk," he added.

Developing a purpose-built racing and drifting track in the Malé area is one of the key pledges of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Minister Rafiu confirmed that once land is allocated, work on the project will begin promptly, fulfilling the president’s commitment to providing a safe and professional venue for motorsports.

The planned track is expected to not only cater to racing enthusiasts but also reduce the risks associated with informal racing activities on public roads, which have raised safety concerns in recent years.
